ABSTRACT

Objective:To explore MR examination scheme for common peroneal nerve and its branches in the popliteal fossa. Methods: Oblique coronal improved fast spin echo (FSE-XL) T1W, FSE-XL T2W, FSE-XL T2W+iterative decomposition of water and fat with echo asymmetry and least-squares estimation (IDEAL), short time inversion recovery (STIR) and sagittal three-dimensional fast spoiled gradient-recall echo (3D FSPGR)+IDEAL scanning were performed on 30 popliteal fossa of 30 volunteers. CNR of the peroneal nerve/femoral muscles in oblique coronal images of different sequences were calculated and compared. The displaying scores of the common peroneal nerve and its branches in oblique coronal images, of sagittal 3D FSPGR+IDEAL on common peroneal nerve and its branches were all analyzed. Results :The overall differences of CNR in the oblique coronal FSE-XL T1W, FSE-XL T2W, STIR, FSE-XL T2W+IDEAL had statistical significance (F=123.57, P<0.01), of CNR between FSE-XL T1W, FSE-XL T2W and STIR, FSE-XL T2W+IDEA were also statistical significance (all P<0.01). There was no significant difference in overall scores of common peroneal nerve (χ2=0.077, P=0.942) among FSE-XL T1W, FSE-XL T2W, STIR and FSE-XL T2W+IDEAL, while the overall differences of the scores of lateral peroneal cutaneous nerve, deep peroneal nerve and superficial peroneal nerve among the 4 sequence images were statistical significance (all P<0.05), FSE-XL T2W+IDEAL and STIR sequence images showed statistical significance differences of lateral peroneal cutaneous nerve, the deep peroneal nerve and superficial peroneal nerve (all P<0.05). The displaying rate of 3D FSPGR+IDEAL imaging for common peroneal nerve and its branch were all 100%. Conclusion: MRI can well display common peroneal nerve and its branches in the popliteal fossa with recommended FSE-XL T2W+IDEAL and sagittal 3D FSPGR+IDEAL sequences.

ABSTRACT

Objective To explore the image features of benign fibrous histiocytoma of bone and its correlative differential diagnosis. Methods Nine cases of benign fibrous histiocytoma of bone were retrospectively analyzed by comparing the imaging findings with surgical and pathological results. Results In all 9 cases, the tumors were single, ranged from 10 mm?15 mm?20 mm to 50 mm?50 mm?60 mm in diameter, which appeared as round or oval destruction with clear border in the bone, neither calcification nor ossification. The border of tumors in 5 cases was accompanied by integrated sclerosis ring with homogeneous thickness. There were expanding changes in 6 cases,no expanding changes in 3 cases.4 cases underwent MRI,2 cases were homogeneous, low signal on both T1WI and T2WI,and 2 cases were low signal on T1WI and high signal on T2WI with low signal sclerosis ring in circumference. There were no periosteum reaction and soft-tissue tumor in 9 cases. Conclusion X-ray,CT and MRI are valuable in the diagnosis of benign fibrous histiocytoma of bone, for some typical cases, the correctly diagnosis of it can be made before operation.

ABSTRACT

Objective To analyze the imaging features and its value in diagnosing primary malignant fibrous histiocytoma(MFH) of bone. Methods Imaging features(X-ray,CT,MRI) in 8 cases of MFH confirmed pathologically, and were retrospectively reviewed. Results The location of lesions in 6 cases was in upper femur,2 cases was in upper tibilar.Worm-eaten-like bone destruction withindistinct margin was presented on X-ray film, some lesions showed slightly marginal sclerosis.Tumors were soft tissue density on CT(CT value was 34~35 HU).The masses of soft tissue were showed much distinct. Conclusion The primary MFH of bone is not of characteristic imaging findings. It can improve obviously the diagnosis of the disease by the comprehensive analysis of the imaging data.
